Battle for domain.nu

The government of the Pacific island of Niue states that its national .nu domain is illegally seized by outsiders. The potential of the domain, consonant with the word new, was first seen by an American businessman, William Semich, who in 1997 applied to ICANN and received the rights to administer it and sell names, providing in exchange for Niue residents free Internet access. Unexpectedly for himself, he thereby found the golden bottom: the names began to sell very well in ... Sweden, because .nu means "now" in Swedish. Now the government of Niue has decided to win back part of the income received from the national domain of the island state with a population of 2 thousand people. The country exports coconuts and fruits, but its economy mainly relies on foreign aid. The government of Niue accuses Semich of violating the agreement, according to which he promised to pay the island 25% of the turnover from the sale of names. The entrepreneur, however, states that he did not make such promises. The annual turnover of Semich NU Domain is about $ 4 million. Niue statesmen accuse Americans of “digital colonialism” and try to appeal to the citizens of Sweden, hoping that if they find out about the injustice, this will help to change the situation.
