Yota expands: after Moscow and St. Petersburg - Sochi, Ufa and Krasnodar

On March 17 , the following message appeared on the WiMAXInfo.ru website:

- At today's press conference on the presentation of the first laptop with integrated WiMAX - Samsung NC 10 WiMAX Edition - Yota CEO Denis Sverdlov said that the next cities after Moscow and St. Petersburg, in which Yota WiMAX will appear in the very near future, will be Sochi , Ufa and Krasnodar. Yota WiMAX network in these cities will appear already this year. Perhaps even this summer. According to rumors, the Yota WiMAX network is already present in some areas of the city of Sochi.

The end of the quote. (Hereinafter, when quoting, I changed the spelling for the better. - Mithgol.)

Discussion on the Kuban.Ru forum added to this a number of unofficial (and in some places mutually contradictory ) information:

1) They have one base station ready in the center. (In the role of the default city , hereinafter, Krasnodar is most likely . - Mithgol.) They plan to open in the autumn. By the end of the year, 100-150 stations can be built .

2) In Krasnodar, a base station will be placed at the intersection of Mira and Oktyabrskaya streets , it seems that in the beginning and in the middle of May they will start.

3) By calling on the phone number listed on Yota’s website, it was possible to find out that the tariffs will be the same as indicated on the website . (That is, without a regional surcharge. - Mithgol.)

4) In fact, there will not be 10 megabits. In reality, it will be 1 - 1.5 Mbit / s, judging by what the comrades from Moscow and St. Petersburg write .

5) At some old forum, the Yotov members themselves stated that they are claiming only a marginal niche, that is, STC (This is the main provider in the province. - Mithgol.) Will be forced out mainly from where it is not (from the street, for example).

6) The “ General Information ” page on the Yotov site says that offices have been opened and the first base stations have been established in Ufa, in Sochi, in Krasnodar.

The end of the information.

In connection with this news, I wish to listen to the opinions of those masters from Moscow and St. Petersburg who have been used to use Yotoy. Does your impression of access speed coincide with the numbers (from one to one and a half megabits per second), which are named on the forum?

Even in connection with this news, I propose to discuss the question of whether Yota’s strategy aimed at coming first to the two largest cities of the Krasnodar Territory is correct. This question is not as simple as it seems at first glance.

That is, at first glance, of course, in large cities there are more potential users, due to this, the cost of the initial arrival to the city will pay off more quickly.

But, on the other hand, “UTK” (the main one, because “Svyazinvest”, an Internet provider in the region), in three large cities of the region (in Krasnodar, in Sochi, in Novorossiysk), offers subscribers the DISEL-Unlim City ADSL tariff , much cheaper than the usual "DISEL-Unlim". After reviewing the tariffs , you can see that in Krasnodar and in Sochi and Novorossiysk, a two megabyte channel costs 2500 rubles per month, while in other cities of the region for a megabit channel they require 2900 rubles a month, but they don’t provide a two megabit one at all.

It seems from this that if Yota had gathered to come to Armavir, to Yeisk, to Kropotkin, to Slavyansk-on-Kuban, to Tuapse, to Tikhoretsk, to Labinsk, to Krymsk, to Anapa, to Belorechensk, to Timashevsk and Gelendzhik (I copy this from Wikipedia to a city in the Krasnodar Territory with a population of less than two hundred thousand, but still more than fifty thousand inhabitants), then the superiority of its tariffs there would be significantly more repeated and convincing.

However, I personally have no hope for this parish. Most of the so-called “alternative operators” of the Krasnodar Territory act in a pattern, that is, it moves through the cities in descending order of their population, comes first to Krasnodar, then to Sochi, and then (if there are forces left) to Novorossiysk, steps on all three carefully and carefully UTK decomposed tariff rakes, on which it calms down forever, leaving dozens of other cities in neglect and vegetation.

Otherwise, they would be destined to feel somehow stupid: breaking traditions, a risky network expansion strategy, etc.

But it would seem that the resident population of such cities as Tuapse (63.5 thousand inhabitants), Anapa (53.6 thousand inhabitants), Gelendzhik (50.7 thousand inhabitants) during the holiday season increases many times due to the enormous influx of tourists, starting exceed the population of the same Novorossiysk (231.1 thousand inhabitants). And if it doesn’t surpass it (it’s still a lot of tourists, but each of them for a while), then come close.

I can only hope that the operation of WiMAX in Sochi will bring Yota to the knowledge of this particular resort towns, and then to the corresponding changes in the strategy of penetration into the Krasnodar Territory.

What do you think?
