ChronoPay mutes ROMS "music"
The company ChronoPay , which specializes in processing payments by bank cards on the Internet and serving 95% of the Russian online music sales market, announced a landmark solution. From April 1, 2007, she will continue to work only with those mp3-shops that either have concluded direct agreements with copyright holders or are the licensees of the society for the collective management of the FAIR . The businesses licensed by the POMC company, the “colleagues” of FAIR, will be disconnected from the ChronoPay processing platform. The same fate is prepared for stores that have both FAIR licenses and ROMS licenses.
“We decided to work with only one collective rights management society,” said Denis Sotin, vice president of ChronoPay. This choice is conditioned by the willingness of FAIR to undergo a full-fledged financial audit and pay royalties in due amount. Refusal to service stores with two licenses followed, because, according to Sotin, it is not clear how in their situation business transparency is possible.
In his comment to Kommersant , Denis Sotin identified three options available to mp3 merchants in the new conditions: to refuse the services of ROMS and obtain FAIR licenses, change the processing operator (there is still Cyberplat, Assist) or conclude direct agreements with the owners. Since the latter is unlikely, the strike will most likely have to be held by the ROMSU, to which AllOfMp3.com alone earns half the revenue. If we add the rest of the sites to ChronoPay processing to this resource, it turns out that POMC loses 75% of revenue. In addition to AllOfMp3.com, customers of ChronoPay are such resourceful shops as Alltunes.com, Mp3search, Delit.net, Mp3sugar, Mp3Spy, etc.

Opponents of Russian societies for collective management of rights in their current form say that they do not believe that FAIR is significantly different from ROMS: “Rights management organizations should be created directly with labels. FAIR in this sense does not differ from ROMS, this organization has no relation to the rightholders, ”said Igor Pozhitkov, head of the IFPI office in Russia. According to him, there is only a “redistribution of the scam market”, because Minister German Gref promised US sales representative Susan Schwab to close such organizations as ROMS and FAIR already by June of this year.
