Ubuntu 9.04 Beta

Immediately I warn you, this is not a review. Just thoughts that came to mind during use.

In fact, the official beta has not yet come out, but judging by the roadmap , the output is scheduled for tomorrow.

But nevertheless, due to the fact that I did not succeed in making friends with Linux Mint 6, I did n’t want to put 8.10 again, I decided to take a chance and still try to install a “buggy share” called Ubuntu 9.04 “Jaunty Jackalope”. I think without emotion you will share my irony, for indeed, the previous versions of the developed ubunt have caused me longing for debian unstable / experimental.

So to the point. After downloading the image from the Daily Build Alternate i386, with a little anxiety;) took up the installation. (By the way, remind me why on the C2D with two RAM gigs use the amd64 assembly ... I don’t see any difference;)

During the installation process, I did not experience any difficulties, my previously created LVM group was determined to be correct, no overheads and errors were noticed. I would like to note the download speed of the main installer, I did not sit with a stopwatch, but quickly. The same can be told about the whole installation process. From the novels: it became possible to enable automatic downloading and installation of critical updates, which in the previous release seemed to be only in the server version of the distribution. Updated equipment list. The installer offers two options for the initrd - or sharpened for the current system, or cram all the modules that exist. Ext4. Yes, perhaps that's all. Perhaps in the normal, non-alternate version of the distribution, there will be more innovations in the installation.

Over the download speed, the guys from Canonical really did a great job, again, they didn’t notice the stopwatch, but the fact that the download time before GDM was noticeably reduced is a fact.

By the way, the new GDM theme is pretty cute in principle.

The appearance of the desktop in principle has not changed.

Two days of work did not reveal any fatal flaws. In general, the system became like that ... faster. The compiz speed has increased significantly, perhaps because of the GEM that is used by the kernel (I have a video from intel).
In general, positive emotions.

Thanks for attention.

UPD: Thank you for your karma;) Moved to Ubuntarium

UPD2: Let's add a little

Firstly, I was very pleased with the new version of HPLIP, first there were some new settings (but I think this is still the merit of the new driver in CUPS), and secondly, the new version is written in Qt4.

Further, that feature which developers declared as an innovation. New notification system.

This is a mixer job.

Notifications are not interactive, they simply notify and do not require anything else from the user.
