Crisis: cellular operators unite networks

Two global cell communications giants Telefónica (260 million subscribers) and Vodafone (289 million subscribers) yesterday announced sharing infrastructure in several adjacent markets, that is, in those countries where both of them are present. These are Great Britain, Germany, Ireland and Spain (negotiations are still under way for the Czech Republic).

Such an emergency measure will help reduce costs during a crisis. Now, companies do not need to rent towers in regions where there are partner towers, and duplicate towers can be safely demolished and not paid for their maintenance.

For consumers, such crisis measures of operators are sheer pleasure: now they have twice as many “native” towers, that is, the reception area of their phone immediately increases dramatically.

According to the operators, the antimonopoly services should not object to this transaction, because Telefónica and Vodafone will continue to charge traffic separately from each other, they are not going to infringe upon competitors in any way and do not plan to merge.
