Latvian bloggers are asked to pay for videos from YouTube

Hello from Latvia, we have interesting things going on here in recent days.

A few days ago, the AKKA / LAA copyright protection organization sent out about 500 warning letters to Latvian bloggers and homepage owners who, on their websites, placed music videos from YouTube using the embed code. AKKA / LAA believes that it is impossible to publish a video in this way - you can only post a link to the clip on the site, but not be able to watch it directly from Latvia.

The main idea of the letter - YouTube videos violate copyrights and you have to pay for them. Otherwise, the sites will be closed. "Subscription fee" for bloggers is 10 lats ($ 20) per month, if the number of videos does not exceed a hundred.

The Latvian Internet community responded to AKKA / LAA’s action by posting an annual report on the expenditures of this public organization to the public. In 2007, copyright fighters spent 400,000 lats ($ 800,000) only on their own salaries. This non-profit organization has spent 215 thousand lats for “other expenses”.

By the way, this is not the first case of attacks on the Internet - recently the same AKKA / LAA closed several large torrent-servers. Even then, the question arose that the owners of torrent sites did not violate the law, as they did not personally distribute the files with copyright objects, but only gave links to the computers of users of torrent networks where the videos, music and programs were stored. Despite this, criminal proceedings were instituted against them, and some face real imprisonment.

As an option, to avoid punishment, it is enough to move the site to a foreign hosting.
