The creators of Skype and Kazaa are building a peer-to-peer TV network

Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis chose a name for their new project to create a peer-to-peer television network, previously known under the codename Venice. The service is now called Joost . Zennström and Friis are the developers of the Kazaa file-sharing network and the currently-popular Skype IP telephony system. The new Joost service is expected to combine the virtues of traditional television and interactive web services. Users will be able to switch channels by clicking on links, view any of the programs at a convenient time, pause playback and rewind uninteresting parts. In addition, it will provide search functions and controls over copyright compliance.

For end users, the Joost TV network will be free of charge, while Zennström and Friis will pay for the costs of maintaining its efficiency through advertising. Currently, the system is undergoing comprehensive testing, its launch into operation should take place this year. According to CNET News, citing statements from a Joost representative, the name for the new company was chosen solely because of its sound and does not mean anything. Currently, on the Joost website, you can find answers to the most frequently asked questions, see screenshots of the client program for working with the peer-to-peer network, and also get acquainted with additional information about the future service.
