Last.fm will add video support to Audioscrobbler

Last.fm , a popular music site, is going to apply its social recommendation method to video.

Last.fm is working on supporting video clips in its Audioscrobble software, which saves the names of music tracks played by the user and adds them to the user profile and to its database. Then Last.fm offers the user songs that are similar to his preferences. Martin Stiksel, founder of Last.fm, while giving an interview to The Register at SXSW Interactive, didn’t really want to talk about the details of launching a new service.

Video is a natural extension of the strategy: fewer than 100,000 video clips were made, while Last.fm has a base of more than 60 million songs. Such a number of tracks became available due to the conclusion of contracts with EMI and Warner, allowing broadcast their huge database of songs.

Last.fm is one of the few British companies that has achieved success with Web 2.0. She set herself a goal to succeed in the area that Google is not interesting (Page with Brin said that they do not like music - come and figure it out), and Yahoo failed, helping music lovers to put everything together and save them from walking on various web resources.

Last.fm had offers from large companies, like all webdvanol firms, but people who came with a huge amount of money were, to put it mildly, sent home. The experience of such transactions has already been: in 2004, Yahoo bought MusicMatch - the consequences are known to us.

PS: At SXSW Interactive, Martin Stiksel said that Last.fm is not a DRM fan, and joins a unanimous chorus against it.
