Seagate doubles Serial ATA 3

Yesterday, Seagate unveiled a new SATA 3 interface to the public, with a data transfer rate of up to 6 Gbit / s. Demonstrated 6 Gigabit interface in action was at a partner conference in New Orleans.

It is noteworthy that the new generation of the interface retained backward compatibility with SATA (maximum speed of 1.5 Gbit / s) and SATA 2 (3 Gbit / s): the same cables and connectors are used to connect drives to the controller.

Another feature of SATA 3 is increased power efficiency. In addition, the new version of the interface has improved the Native Command Queuing function, which improves overall system performance, especially in applications that work intensively with working with large amounts of data.

At the demonstration, Seagate unveiled two hard drives - the Barracuda 7200.12 with SATA 3 Gb / s interface, which is now being mass-produced, and a prototype with SATA 6 Gb / s interface. The whole thing worked with AMD system logic with a SATA 6 Gb / s controller. The first drive showed a maximum transfer rate of 2.5 Gbit / s, and the second - 5.5 Gbit / s, clearly confirming the advantage of the interface of the new generation.

However, it’s too early to talk about a breakthrough. More precisely, the commercial implementation of this speed achievement. On the support of SATA 3 6 Gb / s said only AMD. The desktop platform of this company called Pisces with SATA 3 support should be released in the next quarter of this year. Yes, and shown HDD - while the prototype. However, next year, I am sure, we will be able to already buy new hard drives. Moreover, according to experts, the cost of hard drives with a 6-gigabit SATA interface will be only 25% more expensive than similar models.
