On March 4, at a regular meeting of the
Firefox / Gecko Delivery Meeting , devoted in particular to the release of the next stable version of the
Mozilla Firefox 3.1 browser (codenamed Shiretoko)
, a proposal was made to increase the version number of this release to
3.5 .
The proposal was accepted, as
reported on March 6 .
The reason for the decision was a significant amount of changes and innovations in the new version of the browser:
- new JavaScript engine TraceMonkey;
- < video> tag support from the HTML 5 specification;
- Improved control over the preservation of personal information (the new browsing mode of Private Browsing is similar to what is available in IE8 and Safari 4);
- significant improvements in the display of web pages.
It is also possible to include in the new version support for the
< audio> tag and new CSS3 selectors.
The next beta, which is scheduled for release on March 12, will still be number 3.1b3, but the fourth will already have number 3.5b4. The version of the browser engine will remain unchanged (Gecko 1.9.1).
It seems to me that this decision was also influenced by the upcoming release of IE8 and the unexpected release of beta Safari 4. That’s probably what the Mozillers have decided, if not to release a new version of Firefox, then at least to present a significant update.

As a result, the release of Shiretoko is even more delayed, but if this pause will be used to introduce in the next version some of the innovations that have recently appeared in Chrome, IE and Safari, then I am all for it.
PSBy the way,
as Mozilla chief consultant Harvey Anderson (Harvey Anderson)
said in his blog back in January, starting from the next release, Yandex will be used instead of Google for the default search in the Russian version of Firefox.
