Olympus stops at 12 megapixels

The megapixel race tortured even the manufacturers. Olympus is officially coming out of this meaningless competition. Recently, Akira Watanabe, manager of the Olympus SLR-camera division, said that 12 megapixels is enough to cover "almost all the needs of most users." According to him, a household DSLR with 20 MP is generally nonsense, because photographers with such needs need to buy cameras with full-sized 36x24 mm sensors.

In the future, according to Watanabe, they no longer have the intention to participate in the megapixel race in the E-System (the Olympus brand platform for digital SLR cameras). Instead, the company will focus on increasing the dynamic range, color reproduction, ISO sensitivity, as well as improving and accelerating the autofocus.

Actually, such statements are welcome, because for the quality of ordinary photos, the number of megapixels is no longer a determining factor. Only studio photographers, photojournalists and photo artists who print out their creations in A4 format and more still have a sense of focus on this parameter.

The war for the number of megapixels is more marketing and moreover, it is harmful, because it overshadows the progress on the truly important characteristics of cameras.
