I recently bought a
Toshiba Satellite A300-1MO laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium Service P1 preinstalled. Contrary to expectations, there were few surprises during the installation of various programs. Apache Web Server 2.2.11 and PHP 5.2.9 stood up with a bang. But MySQL 5.1.32 was somewhat upset, I had to use a tambourine.
The installation in the forehead led to the fact that at the end the service did not start: the configuration program (MySQL Server Instance Config Wizard) issued the “Could not start service”. Okay, I thought, run it manually. Happened. And the miracles continued in the Administrator (MySQL Administrator), running as root. First, the password specified during the installation did not catch on, I came in with an empty password. Secondly, there are two users in the list: root and user without a name (i.e., an empty string instead of a name). Root properties could not be changed: all fields were disabled. I was graciously allowed to create a new database and user, but it was not possible to connect with this user from MySQL Query Browser. Similarly, it was not possible to connect with this user when the user was recreated from the console utility mysql.

Here I was completely offended and reinstalled the server again. With the same success. The only thing that went into this topic: after uninstalling the server, you need to wipe the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ MySQL AB key from the registry. Another reinstallation did not solve anything either. But there was a way out.
During the installation process it is proposed to add the server directory to the PATH. I also thought that maybe you should not install the server in C: \ Program Files: go and know what and where it is written. And the space in the path can also have a negative effect (although the default path is C: \ Program Files \ MySQL Server 5.1).
So, the score:
- Demolish server. Clean up traces, including the registry key.
- Create a directory c: \ MySQL \ Server.5.1 - installation directory.
- Create a directory c: \ MySQL \ Server.5.1.Data - for data.
- Add three directories to the PATH: c: \ MySQL \ Server.5.1; c: \ MySQL \ Server.5.1 \ bin; c: \ MySQL \ Server.5.1.Data - the latter is clearly redundant, but just in case.
- Start the installation, send the paths to the directories above.
- The selector "add to PATH" does not choose.
- At the very end, uncheck "configure server now" and exit.
- Wait until the disc light goes out (it is not clear who did something with the disc for about five minutes).
- Manually start the server configuration Start - Programs - MySQL - MySQL Server 5.1 - MySQL Server Instance Config Wizard and configure the server.
At the end of this process, the service started. Hooray!
It seems to have not missed anything.
