Firefox 3 becomes the first non-Microsoft browser to outperform IE6 in market share. That is confirmed by
StatCounter data. The open source browser increased its presence in the market in February to
24 %, while IE6 now occupies around
22.6 %, which makes Firefox the second most popular browser in the world. IE7 is still leading with a share of
40.8 %, although its graph of market share is almost flat since last July.
The cumulative share, regardless of the version, shows that Microsoft is gradually losing its position, while Firefox is increasing it. The Mozilla browser grew from
25.5 % last June to
28.1 % last month, and IE dropped from
68.4 to
62.1 percent. The study shows that many users choose between Firefox or other alternative browsers and do not consider IE as a candidate. In addition, IE is limited to the Windows platform, while the alternative is available under other platforms.
Other alternative browsers also slightly increased their shares. Opera 9 now takes
1.9 %, and Safari 3
1.6 %.
