Microsoft pursues British cybersquatters

Microsoft takes on the war with foreign cybersquatters, seeking damages from five UK companies that have registered domain names that violate their trademarks and trademarks.

The software giant began fighting American cybersquatters in August last year in an attempt to stop illegal domain registrations containing Microsoft’s trademarks and product names.

Over the past six months, Microsoft has deleted more than 1,100 illegal domain names, the purpose of which was users who typed non-Microsoft addresses (for example, w i indowsvista.com) in the hope of finding genuine information about Windows Vista.

“With each clicked ad link, a cybersquatter or a network of advertising sites gains from trademark owners,” said Microsoft lawyer Aaron Kornblum in a statement.

The Redmond company contacted these five British companies through a legal representative and asked them to fulfill various conditions, including a ban on such actions in the future.

The corporation also stated that it had reached an agreement with Dyslexic Domain Company Ltd and received a cash payment from a British company, according to Microsoft, which registered more than 6,000 domains.

The company also filed three new lawsuits in the US and amended one petition filed in August, adding the names of the defendants whose names were hidden at that time.

"The Internet is a huge platform for those who speculate on domain names," said Jonathan Robinson, chief operating officer of NetNames , the company that manages the domains of other companies.

“There are a number of professional organizations that make the state of registration slightly modified, or typo-names of well-known brands,” says Robinson.

Microsoft recalls that using its trademark violates the 1999 American law Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, under which anyone should expect a $ 100,000 fine in the case of using the same, similar or altered brand in the name in order to gain from this benefit. However, despite this, the number of cybersquatters does not decrease.
