NASA has completed online voting on choosing the next target for the Hubble orbital telescope, the project website reports. The winner was the colliding galaxies Arp 274. From March 2 to March 5, Hubble will take a full-color photograph of this object in high resolution. It will be published on the website of the project " 100 hours of astronomy ."

About 140 thousand people took part in the voting on youdecide.hubblesite.org, which began in late January 2009. Six applicants competed for the right to become the next object to study. Arp 274 has become a favorite of the race almost from its very beginning. On the day of the end of the voting on March 1, 2009, 67021 votes were cast on his account.

The galaxy NGC 5172 was in second place with 26,987 votes. Third place was taken by the region of enhanced star formation NGC 6634 in the constellation Sagittarius, which gained 21,475 votes. The troika of leaders is followed closely by the galaxy NGC 4289, the planetary nebula NGC 40 in the constellation Cepheus and the planetary nebula NGC 6072, located in the constellation Scorpio.

Internet voting on the choice of a new target for the Hubble telescope was conducted in the framework of the International Year of Astronomy (MGA), which was announced in 2009.
