Augmented reality is a term that refers to all projects aimed at complementing reality with any virtual elements. Augmented reality is an integral part of mixed reality, which also includes “augmented virtuality” (when real objects are integrated into a virtual environment). In principle, a mixed reality can be considered a transitional stage between real and virtual reality.
The video at the beginning of this post is just an example of augmented reality, developed by the Italian company AR-media . ARSights technology allows you to try it out even at home. To do this, we just need a webcam, a printer and special software, kindly provided by AR-media. ')
Immediately it is worth making a reservation that we will not be able to “put” on the table or “hold” in the hands of any virtual object. We are limited to three-dimensional models of famous monuments of architecture from Google Earth. But in order to just get acquainted with augmented reality and understand what it is, they are enough.
So let's get started:
1. Download and install this plugin for Google Earth. We need it in order to enjoy three-dimensional maps right in the window of your browser. 2. Next, download ARSights Placemarks . This file contains the coordinates in Google Earth of all objects supported by ARSights. 3. Actually, the utility that will help us realize augmented reality - ARSights application . Download, install. 4. We print a special marker . The manufacturer advises to use glossy paper, although I was quite normal. 5. Connect the webcam. 6. Go to the ARSights website, select an object in Google Earth, download the 3d model and launch it in the ARSights application. We are waiting for the program to perform all the necessary operations and enjoy. (You can start enjoying by putting a marker in the frame)
In conclusion, I want to say that, like everything else in this world, ARsights technology is not perfect. It took me enough time to set it all up, and ultimately I almost did not get satisfaction. I don’t know if my old webcam was the culprit, my hands were crooked or tired after a hard day, but something tells me that this is not the reason. Anyway, AR-media company should be thankful for the fact that today it allows an ordinary user to taste a pie called “augmented reality” for free.
