All preparations are complete. The mechanism is set in motion. Hurry to send your applications to the
Google Summer of Code program , aimed at attracting students from every corner of the planet to the world of open source codes and technologies.
Many of the readers probably don’t see how free applications play a huge role for Google. In its work, the company uses the Linux kernel, the free compiler GCC, Python and Samba. The company also contributes to the development of all these projects by directly adding its own and improving the existing code.
In addition, we work closely with the open source community. This is manifested both in the form of patches for some projects and in the form of independent open projects, one of which is
Google Web Toolkit . We sponsor young developers working in universities and provide a platform for hosting sites to thousands of initiative projects. Not without modesty, we note that this platform has become one of the largest online code development communities, second only to
SourceForge.net .

But let's not move away from the topic. Last year, we paid 630 students from 90 countries of the world $ 4.5 thousand each. They began work on their projects, which were selected by hundreds of supervising organizations from the six thousand proposed ones, and gained invaluable experience in real-world conditions.
Many of the students we sponsored are still actively involved in developing applications for supervising organizations and make their own contribution to their development. Angela Byron, for example, began her work with the Drupal content management system during Google Summer of Code 2005. In 2006, she acted as the administrator of the organization, and now is one of the managers of the newly created Drupal Association. Other students have completed short-term internships, got a regular job and are working with us or with other companies, including IBM and NetApp, or even started their own business.
We are pleased to announce that this year we plan to additionally sponsor 200 students and several organizations. If you are a student, and you have a desire to write code for open source projects this summer, we will be happy to
review your project before March 24th.
