FathomDB is a new startup from Y Combinator.

Today launched a closed beta test. At the moment, few details are known about this startup (for example, it is not known who is behind it), but the idea looks very interesting. FathomDB offers us "relational databases as a service."
If in fact, at the moment it is MySQL on EC2 with various “buns”. Therefore, you can start using this service without any problems, or vice versa - stop it.

From the "buns" we are offered automatic backups and monitoring, as well as all sorts of usefulness for performance analysis (at the moment, apparently, not very advanced - pie charts and viewing the slowest queries). A screencast is available on their website, as well as an offer to leave an e-mail (after which they promise to write you when they create your account).
In the future, according to the developers, it is planned to support other databases and hosting sites.

What is interesting is that WebMynd , also a YC-start-up (the next ghetto?;), Started using FathomDB last year and is good at promoting it :)

In principle, a great idea with moving in the right direction (although this is, of course, not a mainstream product).
And, if I am not mistaken, fault-tolerant databases on EC2 are offered by at least one more, larger player - RightScale .
