Opera Mobile with Gears support

Immediately after the advent of technology then Google Gears, many users often asked a reasonable question - whether Opera browser will support this technology and when. So far, the official response was - Gears support is planned, we will not say the exact dates. However, now the case is clarified: the Norwegian programmers have laid out for public testing on the specialized section of the Opera Labs website the technological pre-release of the Opera Mobile 9.51 beta 2 browser, which already includes Gears support. Let me remind you that, according to a good tradition, test versions of the Mobile Opera are distributed free of charge.

Now for some details. Firstly, the “Technology preview” means that the final release of Opera Mobile is just around the corner, which is good news because the former final is listed at number 8.65 (read - well, very old technology) and was released about two years ago. Honestly, it's time to correct the situation and begin to delight users of the mobile version with more frequent releases containing really fresh technological solutions.

Secondly, with regard to fresh solutions. It is clear that the inclusion of support for Gears is a kind of fashion. In fact, this is only Google’s own very successful development, which does not oblige other developers to use it at all. Even if this technology is classified as Open Source. Many, probably, have already understood from the official information of Opera Software of recent years that a kind of “fix idea” among Norwegian programmers is to teach the whole world to use standards. Both browser developers and web designers. Therefore, simultaneously with the inclusion of Gears support (at the request of users), Opera Software programmers do not forget about web standards: they are no less actively involved in the core of the Opera browser and support for Offline Web Applications technology, described in the HTML 5 specifications. We reached the "finish line" - the final polishing of specifications is in full swing. And the developers at Opera Software have much more hope for this technological solution than for Google Gears.

Is such a move tactically correct? Personally, I tend to respond positively, remembering how often Google without warning just changed something in their services, constantly putting both browser developers and users of Google services in an ambiguous situation. I think it is unlikely that such “surprises” should take place, and the fact that Gears is an open source development does not change the situation. And the availability of publicly available, fixed on the "paper" and translated to the rank of the international standard specification allows you to avoid the "self-will" of the authors of the technology and to maintain the stability of the network with web applications that support these specifications. A little more about this can be found in the ODIN (Opera Developer Network) blog in the article by Andreas Bowens.
