How to stop animated gif in browser

Accidentally discovered that in chrome when switching tabs animated gifs freeze. The discovery pleased, because There was a way to turn off the annoying avatars in LJ. Googling on this topic, I learned that it turns out, in IE and FF, the animation is turned off even easier - press Esc. But in chrome it, unfortunately, does not work.
