Speed matters

Google vice president, Marissa Meyer, at the Web 2.0 conference told the story of a user test. A group of Google users was interviewed on the subject of how many search results they would like to see on one page. Those asked to show more, more than those 10 pieces that the search engine produces usually. “A lot is not enough,” they said.

Especially for them, Google increased the issue to 30 results. The volume of traffic and profitability decreased by 20%.

Why didn't they like it? After all, everything was done exactly as they themselves wanted.

It turned out that something else had changed. On the generation of a page with ten results, the server took 0.4 seconds, on a page with thirty it took 0.9.

Only half a second the difference reduced traffic by 20% and spoiled the user experience of the site.

Such a conclusion can be a surprise - do people notice a delay of half a second? - but at Amazon.com we received similar data. In order to test, we gradually delayed the return of the page by the server and found that even small delays lead to a significant and costly drop in profits.

Then Marissa said that after, in her new version, the Google Maps pages began to weigh less, and the maps were rendered faster, the volume of traffic immediately grew, as did the use of the service in general.

The lesson is, said Marissa, that speed matters. People don't like to wait, so don't make them do it.
