The domain name system is threatened

Representatives of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) spoke at the UN meeting on Monday. They believe that the domain name system (DNS) is threatened.

“Domain names for many years were primarily identifiable by various companies and Internet users who own sites, but now domains are increasingly turning into a tool for scammers and ransomware,” said WIPO head Francis Gurry.

Harry says that you need to tighten the laws, because now cybersquatters can register almost any address in their own name without any problems.

Despite the fact that in 1999 a system was launched, according to which a cyber squatter could have a domain name taken away, their number is growing. Thus, over eight years of the system’s operation, about 10,200 complaints about misappropriation of a domain were filed, and only in the last year 1823 complaints were received. It was also noted that in 85% of cases the domain was returned to the rightful owner.

At the meeting, Harry named the main methods that cybersquatters use to register domain names. So, for the frauds, automatic scripts are used that check the expiration date of domain names, and in the event of its completion registering the domain on a cybersquatter.

Separately, Francis noted the “domain-name tasting” system, thanks to which cybersquatter can use a domain for free for five days (however, nothing prevents to re-register a domain again).

Thus, as Harry notes, the domain name system turns into a speculative market.
