To some extent, this event could have been expected: Opera Software has been successfully promoting its browsers for GNU / Linux platforms for a long time, and it also has quite a significant weight in the mobile software market. Therefore, the news that Opera decided to join the LiMo Foundation was a kind of logical development of all the company's previous efforts in the market. Currently, more than 50 participants are already represented in the fund, including such companies as Motorola, NEC, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Panasonic, Samsung and Vodafone.
The press release says little about what such cooperation can give both to the company and the foundation, but reading the dry lines of the official document is rather boring - it is much more interesting to independently evaluate the significance of the event, based on already known information. And I must say that the results of the inclusion of Opera in the number of participants in the fund can be quite curious. The Norwegian company has long established itself as a successful developer of mobile browsers, and if this experience is now transferred to the LiMo platform, which can become one of the leaders in the mobile market, many new handsets will be able to offer their owners full access to Internet resources. different from the desktop computer. It is also worth remembering that the LiMo platform is based on free software and you can expect that some of the achievements of Opera Software will finally go into the category of Free Software. However, time will show how effective such cooperation will become and how much benefit it will bring first of all to us - users of mobile devices.
