Luck turned to open XML face

On Monday, it became known about the refutation of the previous officially confirmed reports that the IT Committee of the International Organization for Standardization (MCO, ISO), consisting of representatives from 19 countries, expressed objections to further promoting the Microsoft Open XML format from Microsoft on its way to becoming standard. Now it turns out that the format was almost unanimously approved by the board.

Committee Chairman Eric Lai on Saturday made a statement that the secretary of this ISO branch sent all materials related to the review of OXML in the committee and other official instances for review during the usual five-month process called the “finish line” in the organization. During this period, perhaps even before the end of March, a final decision will be made on the fate of the Microsoft offspring, directly competing with the open and free ODF, as well as with the next candidate for consideration in the ISO - PDF format from Adobe.

This step was made on the basis of new data on the committee’s voting results: it turned out that among the 19 participants only 6 issued comments (not objections), while the rest approved the promotion of the format without question. Let me remind you that earlier it was reported that at least 7 countries appealed against Microsoft’s request, which should have meant that it would be removed from further consideration.

If OXML becomes an international standard, it will open doors to government agencies in many countries of the world and some US states that are allowed to use only those workflow formats that have been recognized by ISO.

The reaction of the press and bloggers covering this topic was not long in coming. Most commentators agree that we have witnessed at least a very strange turn of events, if not called the result of an obvious “judgment” in favor of Microsoft with a cynical disregard for the inevitable resonance in society.
