Multilingual domain names are now one step closer to reality, as
ICANN reported that the test for their use has been successfully completed.
As you know, at present, domain names can consist of only 37 characters: the Latin alphabet, numbers and a hyphen.
Many countries that use their own characters (the same Russia or China) have long demanded the launch of Multilingual Domain Names (Internationalized Domain Names, IDN). However, there are opponents of multilingual domain names, who believe that they will violate the unity of the Internet.

ICANN, the organization that manages domain names, began testing for IDNs in October 2006. The test should have shown how the root servers will behave.
On Wednesday, ICANN stated that during the tests on the simulated system, no problems were observed:
All systems studied behaved as expected.
