I took the original title of the article (or rather, part of it), although it does not quite correspond to the truth. Rather, on the contrary, Google allows AOL to pull on ICQ a little more.
Google has introduced a joint development with AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) to permanently bury the ICQ messenger, the last time “dabbling” with a weekly change of protocol. Now, Gmail users (gmail.com) and Google Talk programs can communicate with their contact contacts without leaving Gmail. Data transfer is carried out according to the Jabber protocol. ')
How to set up Gmail-ICQ follows the detailed instructions.
Immediately comment on: 1. All this works only for GMail-Chat directly on the site, and not for the GTalk program. 2. I did not manage to find the specified item in the section “Settings -> Chat”, so it was necessary first to get into the settings of Chat and select the item “Sign into AIM”
After that, the fad in the section “Settings-> Chat” appeared.
UPD: With the feed ishua I give a link to an older post on the same topic.
UPD2: Replaced the overly apocalyptic title “Google buries ICQ” with a more neutral, truthful one.
UPD Resume: So, after a day of experiments, I can already draw some conclusions. Well, at least compare the pros and cons. Pros:
The system should not depend on regular changes of protocol by AOL Somewhat controversial statement, but we have to assume that this is so
The whole history of communication is stored in one place, on the server. In my opinion - the most important plus. For quite often it is not possible to find any important information only because the conversation was at home, and I am in the office or vice versa.
To communicate with Gmail contacts and ICQ contacts, one program is used; there is no need to keep several different messengers open. Well, this is not an argument at all - multiprotocol programs are now a dime a dozen
Minuses:
Problems with encodings. Users of QIP 2005 and Miranda see in addition to the text of the message HTML tags. And in response to the Miranda users come unreadable "krakozyabry."
The feature is not supported by the GTalk client, so you can only use the web interface. It is also impossible to use any other clients (including mobile), which greatly limits the scope of use
Messages sent to you "offline" simply disappear. It would not be so bad if I knew about it and contacts from ICQ. However, they may not be in the know and may wait for an answer to a question that the interviewee never sees. By the way, when I turned on the “regular” QIP Infinum after the experiments, all these offline messages “reached” me.
The fact that this development is still in a state of “can only be enabled for English (US) users” and has not been relieved of all the above disadvantages for a year or so, it can be assumed that its development has been stopped.
Last word: in my opinion, nothing more than a toy. Pamper - and forget, until the pros seriously weigh the disadvantages.
