If you made a search query on Google between 6:30 and 7:25 PST, you probably saw the message: “This site could harm your computer” that accompanied each search result. This is definitely a mistake, and we apologize for the inconvenience caused to our users. What happened? Very simple - a human error. The messages “This site may harm your computer” in the search results, as is known, appear if malicious software is installed on the site. We do this to protect our users from visiting sites that may harm their computers. We work with the non-profit site StopBadware.org to get a list of URLs. StopBadware carefully examines the complaints of each consumer and decides whether it is fair that the URL is on the list. Since each case must be investigated separately, this list is maintained by people. We periodically receive updates to this list and received one such updated release on the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here is a human error), the address '/' is mistakenly marked as a value in the file and '/' applies to all URLs. Fortunately, our site attendants found a problem. As we do these updates in stages, errors began to appear between 6:27 am and 6:40 am and began to disappear between 7:10 and 7:25 am, so the duration of this error for any particular user is approximately 40 minutes. Thanks to our staff for the quick work. Again, we apologize to site owners who have been mistakenly labeled as dangerous. We will thoroughly investigate this incident and deliver a more powerful verification file in order to prevent its recurrence. Thank you for your understanding.
