OLPC XO-1 near

On Habré from time to time, articles about laptops OLPC XO are skipped, but somehow I have never had a clear description of the laptop. This short article begins the cycle "What is XO, why and how it can be used in our country." It will be a brief review of the iron part of XO.

Where is the firewood

A laptop from ( our team ) appeared back in October of 2007. At that time, the initiative G1G1 had not yet been launched, but open-source laboratories sent one or two copies for free. It was enough to prove himself in the field of translation programs and the shell of Sugar, immediately found friends and ready to help.

A description of how we fought with customs, how much money we had to give to our compatriots for two free copies - all this is uninteresting and sad. It is interesting to open the box and see what is there.

• Horn antennas for IEEE 802.11s operation (self-organizing mesh networks), under which ports are hidden. There are 3 USB ports on the laptop (for example, you can connect a keyboard, a mouse and an SVGA card with a monitor), and ports for a microphone and speakers.

Other wonders can be seen in the previous illustrations:

• very wide touchpad (which, depending on the pressing force, becomes a drawing tablet)
• green waterproof keyboard with unusual key signatures (including typographic characters and specific OLPC icons)
• the excellent convenient handle thanks to which need in a case disappears
• camera, built-in microphone and speakers
• additional buttons on the sides of the screen serving to control the XO in e-book mode (with the screen rotated 180 degrees)

In conclusion, I regret to note that in Russia there are only about a hundred XO laptops in Russia. Some of them were purchased by the G1G1 program by developers, some were sent free developer versions of laptops. Well, the OLPC program of educational camps is gaining momentum - a pilot project will be discussed a little later.
