British company
Black Duck Software , which tracks the licensed status of Open-source projects, has published
statistics on the free software market for 2008. In total, 180,000 projects in almost 4,000 repositories came into their view.
Over the past year, about 17.000 new projects were created. The popularity of programming languages among them was as follows:
C - 47%;
Java - 28%.
')
Among scripting languages, JavaScript (20%) and Perl (18%) are leading. This is followed by PHP (11%) and Ruby (6%). This is a rather surprisingly low result for the last two, considering that Ruby is now widely known, and PHP is considered one of the main web development tools.
All statistics are given by the number of projects, and not by the number of lines of code.
In addition, the company has compiled a list of the ten best newcomers of the year from among free projects. For the measure, they took the number of releases as an objective indicator of developer activity.
The first place was taken by the P2P application based on the Gnutella
Beacon Cache (191 release). This is followed by
AnimeVision anime management
software and a collection of add-ons for the popular blogging platform
Wordpress Themes and Plugins .
