IBM launches social networks for the office

Yesterday, IBM unveiled corporate software based on blogs, social bookmarking, and other Web 2.0 services we are used to.

A program called Lotus Connections allows office workers to create virtual worlds, where they communicate with colleagues, exchange ideas and help each other in collaborative projects. The program is developed by the department of social software , which is formed in the company IBM.

Lotus Connections has only five components: events (activities), communities, social bookmarks (dogear), profiles and blogs. The structure of Lotus Connections almost completely copies the structure of MySpace and other social networks.

Users can tag each blog, post or other event. Tag Cloud makes it easy to find interesting topics.

The user can easily open his blog or publish a document in a collective blog. The main idea is to stimulate communication between employees. It is assumed that with the help of a corporate social network they will find colleagues with similar interests, communicate with each other on business topics, share knowledge and thereby increase the aggregate labor productivity in the company.

The new software was first shown at the Lotusphere conference, where the Lotus developer community meets annually. This choice of location for the presentation is quite logical, because Lotus Connections is the successor of the famous Lotus Notes program, which used to be the undisputed leader in the groupware market, and now gives way to Microsoft Exchange. Independent analysts estimate that last year there were about 125 million Lotus Notes users in the world, while Microsoft had about 200 million Outlook users and another 80 million people subscribed to SharePoint services. Exit Lotus Connections is expected in the I floor. 2007, and it should significantly strengthen the position of IBM in the market.

The introduction of social networks and other Web 2.0 tools into the corporate business process is an obvious recent trend. The standard user software today looks to a corporate customer as a technological gift from an advanced civilization . And now, thanks to IBM, the first full-fledged business packages appear in which all technologies that have proven themselves on the Internet are implemented. Lotus Connections combines the functionality of the MySpace social network, the del.icio.us bookmark sharing service and the Technorati blog search engine. All this is integrated into one package and is ready for business use.

In addition to Lotus Connections, IBM introduced Lotus Quickr: it is a social content manager integrated with Lotus Notes, SameTime instant messaging software, and the Microsoft Office suite.
