The Mail.Ru Agent’s developers managed to solve problems with the ICQ (OSCAR) protocol, which users of “alternative” clients encountered on Wednesday 21 January. The version, which is now available on the official Mail.Ru Agent site, allows you to successfully connect to ICQ servers and exchange messages with other users of this network. (Also, they say, the problem was solved in QIP).
This fact has once again confirmed the ineffectiveness of “prohibitive” measures to combat “alternatives”. The latter in the shortest possible time find a solution to the problem, while the negative image effect that such AOL actions cause is truly enormous. And if earlier the AOL / ICQ client base simply gradually switched to third-party client applications (while remaining within the ICQ network), now, after a series of problems with the availability of the network itself, users are likely to migrate to more reliable networks. Today, ICQ’s chances of losing even a loyal part of its audience are higher than ever.
The story of "alternative" customers clearly shows that the quality of the product wins in competition, and not the "breaking out" of the hands of users.
