Providers are attracted to fight piracy

Digital music sales doubled in 2006, IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) fighter concludes with Internet piracy. According to the report of this organization ( The Register reports ), their volume reached almost $ 2 billion, which is equivalent to a 89% increase. In 2005, sales on the Web brought 1.1 billion.

IFPI recognizes that the profit from the “digit” makes up for the decline in CD sales, but probably not significantly, since the Internet market accounts for only 10% of the industry’s entire trade (2005 figure - 5.5%). The Federation notes the positive role of "preventive" lawsuits against the most harmful pirates - large peer-to-peer networks: losses from the activities of the latter were somewhat reduced in key European markets. In total, about 10,000 such lawsuits were filed in 18 countries around the world last year.

However, the fight against torrent networks can move to a new level. According to RBCdaily , record companies are trying to negotiate with Internet providers to disconnect users who download music for free from illegal resources. IFPI spokesman Alex Jacob noted that the contract with the provider makes it possible, because it spells out the company's right to stop providing services to the user if it violates copyright.

He confirmed that the federation has long been trying to persuade providers to cooperate. Another question is how successful these attempts are. If the refusals continue, the IFPI intends to resolve this problem with the court.

“If a person suddenly discovers that he is left without access to the Internet, this will work,” said IFPI President John Kennedy. “The industry should not fight piracy alone,” he added. Working together with providers, we could achieve global success. ”

The federation expects digital music to make up a quarter of all sold by 2010.
