H.264 and MKV support added to DivX

On Habré passed unnoticed great news from DivX. The company announced that the DivX 7 package will now include support for the H.264 codec, as well as the Matroska container (MKV). Accordingly, all new players and other devices with DivX support will now also support these latest standards, which on torrents have become the de facto standard for digitizing and compressing high resolution video.

Previously, video files compressed with H.264 and “Matryoshka” could only be viewed on a personal computer and on a small number of rare devices with “matryoshka” support: these are, for example, Popcorn Hour and Netgear EVA9150 ; Now MKV will become a recognized standard that will be supported on most consumer devices (they will be marked with the DivX Plus HD logo).

The first companies that licensed the updated codec package were Sigma Designs and Trident Microsystems chip manufacturers. Soon the new chips will go into mass production. Of course, the new standard is backward compatible with all previous versions of MPEG-4 codecs.
