If you are fed up with the appearance of the Gnome, then you can easily diversify it, for example, by adding a taskbar in the Mac style:

I pulled the gnome's main menu applet, calendar applet, desktop switching button to the panel - I like the fact that a small view of it is displayed on each table, it is immediately apparent that, where, the weather widget is a little further. Then the Avant-a settings button. Next come the buttons for running applications.
I think you have already noticed two firefox icons. In poppy this is impossible. But an avant does not just clone a poppy, its work algorithm is something between a poppy dock and a classic taskbar, like in a Windows or a dwarf. Each window has its own icon, for which it is easy and convenient to pull it out or on the contrary to hide it. Yes, by clicking on the icon of the active window, it can be minimized to the dock. Very convenient, the fact that each window is controlled by one button, which is always in one place, which means it is easy to find. No need to search among the drop-down group (I even in Windows always disable the grouping of buttons on the taskbar). Alas, in the current release there is a small bug: sometimes the application button after clicking on it closes and immediately opens at the end of the dock. On the application itself, on the dock and everything else the gnome is not reflected at all - only the button moves and that's it. I am writing off this project as a youth, and I think that this bug will be fixed soon.

I liked very much that the authors seriously approached the project - a system of plug-ins and applets was developed. There is a detailed guide to creating add-ins.
One of the most interesting features is working with a picture on top of the program icon in the dock. For example, the download manager in Firefox can display the progress of downloading a file on the logo:

Or in the dynamics - see the video on
this page .
Music players can display the time of the track or the cover of the current disc:

It is very convenient to work with gimp: each open file is displayed as a floating thumbnail above the dock. Beautiful and very convenient - you can immediately see where a file is open. Something like this was an open screenshot in the gimp:

This panel is implemented by
Avant Window Navigator .
Installation in Ubuntu 8.10 is extremely simple: go to the package manager and set avant. Very detailed and with pictures described
here .
