Google invests in Chinese P2P

For the first time, a rumor about Google ’s investment in the Xunlei Chinese Peering Network appeared three weeks ago .

Xunlei Company (full name Shenzhen Xunlei Network Technology Ltd.) is a Chinese equivalent of BitTorrent and Kazaa, a very promising startup. The program of the same name (its name translates as “Thunder”) was downloaded from 75 million to 100 million Chinese, and about 140 thousand files a day are transferred to the Thunder network.

The startup has already passed the first round of investments, in which venture funds Morningside and IDG Ventures participated. A second round of investment is being prepared with the participation of Ceyuan Ventures . Three weeks ago there were rumors that Google also wants to participate in this round, which involves an investment of about $ 100 million.

Yesterday these rumors were confirmed .

Like its Western counterparts, the Chinese Xunlei program has come a long way from the usual file downloading system to the commercial distribution network of licensed content.

The business model of Xunlei is to license content from copyright holders and distribute it through a P2P network with small advertisements attached to each file. Moreover, soon it is planned to release client software for mobile phones, so that the base of TV viewers will expand even more.

In China, this business may be even more successful than in the West. First, the subscriber base will soon become more than in any western country (123 million in June). Secondly, the Chinese are more actively using the Web for entertainment than Europeans and Americans, so they prefer to download videos from the Internet. Thirdly, in the Asian market, mobile communication technologies are developing at a faster rate, and this is very important for entertainment content.
