Q & A sites have become very fashionable lately. The undisputed leader in this genre is Yahoo! Answers, which leaves in the shadow of other similar projects, and in fact they are many.
Which of these sites actually answer the questions better? Where are the real experts? To find out, the MIT Technology Review journalist spent several days scrutinizing six sites:
Yahoo Answers ,
Microsoft Live QnA ,
Answer Bag ,
Yedda ,
Wondir and
Askville . The results are
published in the journal .
The study consisted of two parts. At the first stage, the base of questions and answers was investigated to determine whether the archive contains the correct answer to the question of whether to trust the well-known “five-second rule” (food that fell on the floor cannot be taken by mouth if it has lain more five seconds).
At the second stage, two original questions were published at each of the sites under study: “Why did the Mormons settle in Utah?” And “What is the best way to cook a toasted cheese sandwich”. As it is easy to guess, these two questions should involve completely different layers of expert knowledge and different people-experts. In the first case, this is a little-known US history, and in the second case, all visitors can participate in the discussion of a simple question. Here, the quality of the discussion can be judged by the number of recipes.
')
Each site received from one to three points for the completeness and originality of functions, as well as up to three points for the quality of the answer to each of the three questions, so that the maximum possible amount of points was twelve.
The results of this interesting experience turned out to be quite predictable. Among the winners - the development of three Internet giants Yahoo, Microsoft and Amazon. Projects from small startups cannot compete with them. Well, the absolute primacy with a large margin keeps Yahoo! Answers. Recall that in just one year of the project’s existence, its audience has
grown to 16.6 million people .
