Hard docks got to Russia

Hooray! A device similar to that described in the topic “ Sharkoon HDD Docking Station ” appeared on sale in Russia.
This is the Vantec NexStar D100S2 . With such a hard-dock, you can easily connect any 2.5- or 3.5-inch SATA drive to the computer without disassembling its case, which actually makes a large USB flash drive out of a hard disk.

The application of this device - system administrators who often have to operate with hard drives and video buffs who need cheap long-term data storage. The truth is worth noting that, according to a recent study by ZakharS , the cheapest megabyte is still in once-recorded DVD discs, but in terms of speed and convenience of operating information, as well as the physical space occupied during storage, hard drives are far ahead. Of course, if you insert this disk into the file storage, the immediate access to the data will be significantly higher, but you should not forget that the storage is not cheap, and the storage on many disks is generally very expensive, and not all tasks need instant access - As a rule, there is time to go to the shelf and select the desired carrier.

The cost at the moment is about 1,100 rubles, which is quite comparable with external USB-boxes.

The device is powered by a complete power supply unit, so that problems with the promotion of disks, sometimes arising from boxes that are powered only by USB, should not be.

Noticed a strange thing. According to the above parameters (HDD with a capacity of up to 1 TB) and green packaging in the photos , this is a different model - NST-D100SU , and not NST-D100S2 , which is on the manufacturer's website in the status “coming soon” and which has support for 1.5 TB drives . But on the other hand, the NST-D100SU should also have an esata interface, and in the specification and in the photo it does not have - only USB. It’s a pity, as the eSATA interface could save performance losses on a SATA-USB controller. According to testing at www.mikhailtech.com , the USB transfer rate is 35 megabytes per second.
