Face Recognition PolarRose: Another Bionic Software Pattern

The concept of bionic software involves the use of cheap / free human labor instead of expensive / inaccessible computing power of computers. The concept is well known from early examples. For example, Amazon MTurk offers open APIs for web applications to access the human mind. Another Google Image Labeler system uses Internet users to recognize images in photos for free. In any case, bionic software involves access to cheap or free human labor through the Internet.

Another original development in this direction is PolarRose.com distributed human face recognition system, which recently announced the start of a public beta test.

The PolarRose system is based on the face recognition engine. It is a kind of proprietary technology developed by the technical director of the Swedish company Jan Erik Solem (Jan Erik Solem) as part of his doctoral work at a Swedish university. The description on the site reports sparingly that the unique Solem algorithms are capable of obtaining 3D information from ordinary 2D photos. Thanks to this, the quality of recognition is “radically” improved.

However, such "breakthroughs" in the field of facial recognition occur almost every year. Promising technologies appear like mushrooms, but still none of them cope with their task. But face recognition is the simplest task that the human brain easily performs at the age of three months (12 months from conception).

It is logical that the developers of specialized software are looking for ways to use human brains in the work of systems. The PolarRose developers managed to find a great way.

Millions of lemmings of users must mark the photos via the Internet, indicating the names of the people who are imprinted there. Thus, they supplement the base of PolarRose and help in the operation of recognition algorithms.

Data collection from users is carried out through a special plugin Polar Rose under Firefox and Internet Explorer. This plug-in reveals human faces in photos that are loaded into the browser, and displays a special icon (rosette), by clicking on which the user can enter the name of a person.

The information immediately enters the database, so that other users, when they upload the same photo, will see the specified person’s name on it. If the photo is not signed by anyone, then the plugin displays photos of “similar” people using the above-mentioned technology by Jan Erik Solem.

The beta version of the plugin will appear in I quarter. 2007, which will be instantly reported to all who leave their e-mail. After that, it is planned to release free APIs in order to have the opportunity to integrate the PolarRose engine on any site.

Before the release of the public beta version, we can only be satisfied with screenshots from the developers .
