2007 will be the year of the widgets

Now on a typical MySpace page you can find dozens of modules with which the user decorates his profile. The page is filled with photos, videos, music, information. This is possible thanks to widgets - these are “containers” for easy and convenient embedding of individual gadgets on a web page. The word "widget" can very firmly enter our lexicon, predicts Newsweek .

Widgets so organically fit into the MySpace interface that many users do not even think about what technology they use. But the technology itself definitely changes the landscape of web development.

Already, on the Web, personalized sites that are a platform for hosting any widgets are gaining popularity quite quickly. There are even programs that create “widget space” on the desktop of a personal computer. Thanks to the widgets there is no need to visit many sites, because all the information comes from them directly. At the same time, widgets penetrate into mobile phones.

“Widgets are the exact opposite of what the web should initially be,” said well-known technoblogger Om Malik, organizer of the Widgets Live conference and one of the authors of the concept of web widgets . You can learn more about the concept in a special podcast on this topic ( MP3 ). “Widgets,” says Om Malik, “deliver the web directly to you.”

If 2006 was a year of social networking and user-generated content, then 2007 should be a year of personalizing and arranging our online life. Special pages that can be filled with widgets have already opened on the portals of Yahoo and Google . According to Marissa Mayer, the Google personalized page is the fastest growing Google service. The choice is huge: thousands of widgets are available to each user.

Many modern sites start exporting content through widgets. It is very convenient for users. For example, they can customize the Flickr photo service widget in such a way that they automatically receive fresh photos on their page, for example, by keyword.

For developers, recently, new services have become available that allow you to track the popularity of widgets and the number of users. For example, the Widgetbox statistics system solves the problem of auditing Web 2.0 applications.

Thus, the web widget is under way.
