Corporations are moving to a web platform

Consumer software is now becoming more advanced than corporate, writes The Economist . The reason for the shift in the “focus of innovation” is that the volume of the consumer market has grown many times over. From the point of view of software developers, it has become much more profitable to create products for the mass public.

At the same time, the corporate software market has stalled in its development. Here, the same developers work as ten years and twenty years ago, and the level of the systems they create has remained almost the same, whereas the Internet has witnessed a real revolution, a cardinal change of platforms. The standard user software today looks to a corporate customer as a technological gift from an advanced civilization .

Corporations are moving to Gmail in droves , universities are happy to use iTunes to distribute lectures in podcast format.

Penetration of consumer software in the corporate world is a very interesting process that occurs before our eyes. Right now we are seeing how corporate bonuses impede the introduction of many innovative programs, including IM pagers and VoIP clients. For example, Skype client developers had to implement a special hacking technique to “break through holes” in corporate firewalls, otherwise the application would be blocked.

Very often corporations, especially large ones, prohibit their employees from using civil software at work. The firewall blocks traffic; special spyware is installed on computers. On the other hand, employees are trying in every way to deceive the tracking system in order to take advantage of modern technological tools, such as VoIP, IM, wiki, blogger platforms and other Web 2.0 applications.

However, now corporations are beginning to understand that it is possible to benefit from the use of consumer software, because it is more advanced technologically than standard corporate systems. For example, a set of free Google Apps for Your Domain services includes corporate email, a calendar scheduler, an IM pager, and a service for creating web pages. All these services were first tested in the mass market, and only after public testing on the Internet were they collected into a package for corporate use.

For a corporation, the use of such civil services is very convenient, because many employees are already familiar with the interface and functionality of these programs, so they do not need special training. In addition, the same set of Google web applications with mail and a scheduler are much more functional and advanced than most corporate programs. When a text editor with spreadsheets (soon), blogs and wiki (a little later) appears, it will become even more attractive for corporate customers. Thus, advanced technologies from the “other civilization” will help increase the efficiency of labor.

Security experts will also eventually see that files in Google data centers may be more secure than in a leaky corporate network. It’s like money: it’s safer to keep it in a bank, not under a pillow.
