Study: Why People Hate Microsoft

The community around Slashdot has always been particularly hateful to Microsoft, so this site provides the most fertile ground for exploring this phenomenon. The user Cliff asked all readers to take part in the survey and convincingly explain why they do not like the world's largest IT company. If someone wants, on the contrary, to declare his love for Microsoft - and this is welcomed if there is argumentation.

In less than a day, the number of comments on Slashdot was close to a thousand, so now a lot of material has been collected for analysis. In principle, you can even systematize and identify the most important causes of hatred.

Low-grade, unfinished programs . Obviously, the world's largest software maker treats its programs as a consumer product. Marketers and managers who are far from programming have a big influence on the company. Because of this, Microsoft programs and equipment are often released to the market as raw, imperfect, poorly performing, unstable, and even unsafe. Almost any Microsoft version 1.0 program can be called terrible. Classic examples of unfinished products: Windows 1-3, Zune, Bob, the first tablet computers, and more.

Among all unstable Microsoft products, the most discontent is caused by unstable operating system , in which any shortcomings immediately become noticeable.

Proprietary closed source software is unreliable by definition.

The monopoly of Microsoft in the market of operating systems worries many. They do not have anything against Microsoft and would also oppose, for example, Apple, if Mac OS was installed 90% of personal computers in the world. The disadvantages of monopoly are obvious: a homogeneous environment is very favorable for the spread of viruses. This could potentially be disastrous. In addition, Microsoft’s monopoly on the OS market allows this company to push through its own file formats, network protocols, and other proprietary standards. Due to interference from Microsoft, many open technical standards, such as the free format of ODF documents, have not yet become generally accepted. Due to the monopoly, Microsoft allows itself not to listen to users, inflate product prices to absurd values, use non-market methods of influencing competitors, etc.

Bad reputation . Throughout its history, Microsoft has committed many acts for which she will ever be ashamed. For example, it destroyed Netscape and BeOS, it finances SCO, forces governments of different countries to introduce Microsoft products in the education system and other state institutions, so that they can put children on the igloo of Windows from childhood, support software patenting in Europe, etc.

Individual Microsoft products cause hatred among those who are forced to use them constantly. This could be Outlook or the Hotmail webmail service, or even the Visual Basic programming language.
