Wandering around the internet, I found a monkey from Sony. This is not really a virtual animal, it is programmed for a specific behavior.
But it's not about her. Speech about evolving virtual animals.

Monkey itself.
Author Karl Sims ( Karl Sims ) - an artist and researcher.
The idea is to create virtual organisms that evolve in the virtual environment created for them.
This film shows such creatures. They evolved to perform specific tasks. Creatures consist of several rectangular parallelepipeds connected by the similarity of muscles and with the beginnings of virtual neural networks.
One of the groups was developed to achieve maximum speed in the water. Most creatures are the result of independent evolution. Many of them exhibit behavioral strategies that are very similar to those we meet in real life.
Another group developed to move on the earth's surface with gravity and friction. The simplest consisted of only two parts. Some are helpless, others are pretty frisky. One of the creatures from the first group was carried to land and subjected (and it takes horror!) To evolution. As a result, it has learned to crawl sideways. The fastest galloped.
The third group learned to jump
The fourth was learning to move to a light source. What happened can now be controlled by this source.
The last group learned to fight for owning a green cube. The creature closer to the cube at the end of the simulation is the winner. That is, just get close and touch the cube. Then one of them learned to block another being. The second had to learn to overcome this obstacle. Well, and so on.
This product was created in 1994! Second Life, Spore and others appeared later ...
Unfortunately, further research has not progressed very much. This was mainly due to the financial problems with which the Thinking Machines campaign, in which Karl worked, pushed.
Here are some more examples of work related to this topic.
Nowadays. True, in my opinion, it looks more like an imitation of the first video (although it could have evolved greatly and so on).
And further.
PS Does anyone know anything else on this topic? PPS In general, a terrible direction ...;)
