Wikia , the commercial project of one of
Wikipedia’s founders, Jimmy Wales, represents
Openserving . Within this platform, created on the basis of modified MediaWiki code, users can create their own social sites, blog and form communities around their projects.
It is important to note that Openserving users will be able to advertise freely on the pages: the only requirement for developers is a link to the Wikia website. This distinguishes a new project from most platforms for creating websites, including the engine and hosting, which usually place their own ad units on users' pages.
Openserving provides a large number of options, including RSS feeds and voting for any topics and comments. You can see the main features of the platform using a

“This is completely free (open-source) software and completely free content,” says Jimmy Wales (quoted by
Reuters ). - “We plan to provide free hosting and give users the opportunity to receive 100% of advertising revenue.”
As with all other wiki projects, says Wales, the company relies primarily on “common sense”, self-regulation of the community that is emerging around projects.
Apparently, Amazon’s investments will be used to develop the project (the company
took part in the second round of Wikia’s investment last week). However, Amazon’s hosting capabilities will not be used in Wikia projects.
Openserving uses MediaWiki code modified by
ArmchairGM , a sports community recently acquired by Wikia. This project is only the first step towards creating a full-fledged network of free network platforms for creating websites: in the future the company plans to develop similar web services based on
Wordpress and
Drupal . Users can thus use a single password on all sites within Wikia projects. “Our goal is to continue to expand and host the widest possible range of free applications and free content,” says Jimmy Wales.
According to statistics, more than 30,000 people are using Wikia projects, placing more than 400,000 materials on them. The company itself, whose office is located in California, employs 38 people.
