China will go the other way in the war of DVD-formats

The largest electronics manufacturers in China, in unison with the authorities of the country, presented last Wednesday the reincarnation of the fully Chinese standard for recording and storing data on optical media - Enchanced Versatile Disk (EVD). A new one - because a similar attempt to promote the “native” for the inhabitants of the Celestial Empire to the market was already made in 2003, but then the contradictions between the parties involved prevented the process and in 2004 the project was temporarily closed.

At the same time, representatives of the industry, who will supply the necessary equipment, and producers of media companies who will provide a sufficient amount of interesting content, apparently discussed all the issues in advance. And, with the active support of the government of the country as part of the national program for getting rid of dependence on foreign standards in the technological sphere, the entire honest company loaded a powerful shell of 54 players already ready to stand on the shelves of stores and hundreds of movies that are already or soon time will be published on EVD.

Zhang Baoquan, General Secretary of the newly formed EVD Industrial Alliance, told a press conference that by 2008 most Chinese manufacturers of DVD-technology (while 90% of such companies belong to the alliance) would completely abandon the outdated DVD in favor of EVD. Seeing, obviously, too many skeptical-stunned people in the hall, he added that the projected growth in popularity of the new format among Chinese consumers clearly makes it clear that by this time the DVD can be forgotten without any consequences for the industry.

As a matter of fact, the reason for such a serious move was not just the abstract program of China’s national technological security, which wants to cover as much of its needs as possible with its own developments. The main thing is that Chinese companies that produce 80% of all DVD players in the world (under their own or foreign brands) have firmly rested against the impossibility of further competition, since a large part of the cost of equipment today is made up of royalties to Western alliances that own the rights to standard DVD.

The new format gives the best sound and picture, more storage capacity than the old DVD, and besides, it has the ability to use some tools of DRM-protected content. But he clearly does not reach the new high-definition standards (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray). Although this is more than compensated for by an order of magnitude simpler technology underlying it, which means much lower prices: EVD players presented at the presentation will be sold at the same price as the average DVD player - $ 80-100.
