Domains for demolition

Controlled by the US government, ICANN (manages Internet address space) put forward the idea of reducing the number of "obsolete" top-level domains. This refers to the domains of countries that no longer exist on the world map.

And the first in the list for annulment is the domain of the Soviet Union .SU (Soviet Union), despite the fact that it now has more than 8,000 domain names registered. The daily increase in the zone .SU, according to statistics , although very insignificant, but there is - 0.16% per day.

As USA Today reports, ICANN discusses this initiative at a domain registrar conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Its members are looking for the best ways to cancel the “top” domains of countries that are already a thing of the past. The fate of domain zones in which there is not a single site is also decided.

The source emphasizes that .SU as a candidate for removal is considered first. The second is the .YU domain of the former Yugoslavia, introduced before the country's division into Serbia and Montenegro. Meanwhile, .SU and especially .YU are not so small, and in the Google issue they have millions of pages.

The same is about the situation with the domain of East Timor .TP, which is ready to be written off for scrap, despite the fact that it has 150,000 sites. The main habitat of the East Timorese sites is now the domain .TL.

With the UK .GB domain is another story, in it domain names can be counted on fingers. Their number ICANN has the right to neglect, removing the entire zone, because the British Internet will not suffer from this, being entirely on .UK.

Meanwhile, according to the logic of ICANN, the US .US domain zone should also be removed, since it has very little practical use, CyberSecurity notes. As is known, in the USA they prefer to register domains in common areas (COM, NET, ORG, etc.), considering them to be “native”. However, this issue in ICANN chose to bypass.

As already noted, ICANN “combs” the address space, guided by the principle of matching geographical names. The domains of the German Democratic Republic .DD, as well as Zaire (.ZR), renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo (.CD), have already been deleted. At the same time, the policy of promotion of new promising domain zones of ICANN is still going on. Recall that the European .EU space has recently emerged, as well as the .TRAVEL zone, created specifically for the tourism industry.

Under the initiatives for the demolition of obsolete domains, ICANN intends to draw up a clear policy, so it accepts comments on this issue on its website until January 31. Before the removal of zones will be given a period of one year or a little more, so that users and site owners have time to cope with the changes.
