μTorrent grew to 28 million users per month

μTorrent - the favorite client of most users of torrent trackers on the PC, since its launch three years ago, has collected a respectable user base. At the end of 2008, growth has not decreased - just the opposite. Over the past (2007) year, the number of μTorrent users has doubled, and this year it has increased to a fantastic 28 million unique users every month.

μTorrent first saw the light in September 2005. A year later, this lightweight client was acquired by BitTorrent Inc., which continues to develop the most popular application, and recently released a Mac version .

Despite the huge popularity, until today it was unknown how many people use uTorrent as their main torrent client. Based on PC Pitstop research, TorrentFreak reported in April that μTorrent was installed on 11.6% of all PCs in Europe and 5.1% in the US. But in any case, the percentage of installations, again, says nothing about the current number of users.

Trying to open up some truthful figures to the public, TorrentFreak asked Simon Morris, vice president of management at BitTorrent, with a question. It was he who told the bloggers that every month 28 million new unique customers are being launched in order to pull something off the trackers.

For comparison, Morris also said about the client Mainline - the second most popular after μTorrent. Its monthly active user base is floating at around 7 million. More interesting is the fact that using μTorrent statistics and knowing its market share, you can more accurately name the number of people using torrents.

Thus, if from 40% to 60% of the market share belongs to μTorrent (which is similar to the truth), we get from 50 to 70 million users of torrent trackers monthly. Well, if 70 million people actually use torrents, it means that 5% of all users connected to the Internet “sit and talk” every month.
