Who wants to be a photo reporter?

The New York Times wrote on Monday about an interesting initiative of the Internet giant Yahoo! and the Reuters news agency, which launches December 5, that is, today, the project You Witness News , which aims to attract ordinary users to create and improve the quality of news.

The idea of the project is based on the fact that today hundreds of millions of owners of mobile phones and other compact digital equipment are walking on Earth, with which you can take photos and videos. According to Gartner's technology research group, in 2006, 48% of all phones sold in the world had an on-board digital camera, which is about 460 million units. Gartner predicts that up to a billion camera phones will already be on sale by 2010.

This situation, obviously, creates the widest possibilities for much more promptly receiving photo and video materials about the events taking place. We all saw examples when amateur filming became the basis of news: the fall of the Concorde plane in France, after which all flights of this aircraft were banned, the recent floods in Europe and Katrina hurricane in the USA — the first scenes from the scene were made by amateurs using simple non-professional technique.

In recent years, a lot of noise has been made in the United States by scenes of violence coped by random passers-by, as well as racist and sexist drunken conversations of various movie stars and politicians in clubs and bars. One such example was cited by Lloyd Braun, the head of Yahoo’s media division, when he talked about the new service: “People don’t say“ We want news created by the audience. ” They want to see Michael Richards [the most recent "lighted" rowdy and squabbler, television star - approx. ed. ] in the club. If the shooting was done with a mobile phone, they are happy. If with a professional camera, they are happy about that too. ”

For such here amateur filming and created You Witness News . Materials added to it will be duplicated on Flickr and an unnamed online video service for the time being. The most interesting of them will be selected by the editors to supplement the news, on equal terms with the staff of Yahoo and Reuters. However, no one is going to pay amateur reporters yet. All that will be due to them is glory.

Time will tell how this service will withstand competition from popular batteries of amateur materials like YouTube or Flickr. However, experts agree that with the availability of convenient tools for working with the service and a sufficient amount of advertising, great success may well be waiting for him.
