A small company from Indiana Cygnus Systems sued the heavyweights of Microsoft, Apple and Google, claiming that it has a patent for a very common file preview function used in browsers and operating systems to display small thumbnails of files without opening them.
Cygnus Systems has sued these three companies, claiming that they are encroaching on their patent in products such as Windows Vista, IE8 and Google Chrome. Apple uses this technology in Finder and Cover Flow.
Despite the fact that Cygnus Systems is suing these three giants, it is not at all possible that they will not be limited to it.
“For us, they are a logical launching pad, comments Matt McAndrews, one of the associates of Cygnus Systems, a law firm - we found a lot of products that potentially infringe the patent, we are working on it.
')
According to Matt, the owner and president of Cygnus, Gregory Swartz (Gregory Swartz) developed this technology when he worked on projects for IT-consulting. The company hopes for “reasonable license fees”, as well as a court decision preventing further infringement of their patent.
The lawsuit was filed in the Arizona Federal Court, where Schwartz lives. Google, MS and Apple haven’t responded to the lawsuit.
Interestingly, Cygnus Systems filed a patent application (No.
7346850 or
Google Patents ) back in 2001 under the title “System and method of icon management of the software environment (System and method of iconic software environment management)”, and only now, in March of this the year, the US Patent and Trademark Office approved it, i.e. 7 years later.
I do not know about you, but I stocked up on popcorn and with great curiosity I will observe how things will end
