DirectX 10 will drag gamers to Vista

Until today, the main evolutionary leap in the development of DirectX interfaces was the addition of software pixel shaders in the eighth version. No subsequent innovations can even compare with what happened now, experts say .

DirectX 10 is a fundamentally new development that was formerly known under the code name Windows Graphics Foundation. For the first time in a decade of history, "game" software interfaces have been completely reworked from scratch. There is little doubt that due to DX 10, all gamers will switch to Windows Vista, since the new APIs will not work in any operating system except Vista.

Among the most significant advantages that DX 10 carries with it are completely new three-dimensional effects, an order of magnitude better detailing of 3D objects and moving objects, and a reduction in the load on the central processor. In addition to this, the sky, clouds, smoke, wool, wood, reflections on water and other surfaces began to look much more realistic under DX 10.

From the point of view of the developer, the main innovation in the DX 10 is the new driver model (Windows Display Driver Model), which has not changed since the days of Windows NT4. Each driver should consist of two parts: User Mode Driver (UMD) and Kernel Mode Driver (KMD).

You can get some ideas about DX 10 if you watch high resolution videos (1280 x 720; 1 min. 42 sec. 93 MB), recorded on a Windows Vista machine with a specially optimized Crysis game. That's very beautiful. Below are just a couple of screenshots.

According to experts, to implement the maximum capabilities of the game plan, systems running Windows Vista will require three main components: video cards of a completely new type, like Nvidia GeForce 8000, Windows Vista operating system and brand new games. Only when all three of these components become available with DX 10 support will we practically evaluate the performance, graphical effects and other advantages of the new generation platforms.
