Intel, following Apple, buys a piece of "imagination"

imagination-technologies Imagination Technologies , which is creating the mysterious mobile GPU PowerVR, seems to be in great demand soon. The fact is that last week Apple invested $ 5 million in a 3.6% stake in the company, and yesterday Intel giant acquired 3% of Imagination Tech.

Why did the world's largest corporations suddenly turn their attention to, in general, not the largest office, about which until recently was heard nothing? It’s all about the Mobile PowerVR GPU chip (something similar is currently used on the iPhone). It was neither announced, nor presented in any other way to the general public, but judging by the reaction of Intel, Apple and Sony (which announced the use of the PowerVR SGX55x chip in the next PSP version) - we are preparing something really tasty.

What are the interests of Apple and Intel? Apple probably plans to integrate the PowerVR chip into an updated iPhone or Apple Netbook, in case it really appears. Intel, in turn, is planning to launch a so-called release by 2010. Medfield “on-chip systems” (32nm process technology), where PowerVR will be used as a graphics accelerator. This platform is created for use in portable devices: netbooks, laptops, UMPC and others.

While heating up the general interest in Imagination Technologies, which is going to roll out its development to a general court as early as next week, Intel, however, does not lose its usual ability. Officials of the company say that if someone is interested in buying a controlling stake in Imagination, they will still do it first.
